Iranian Date Varieties — Which One Is Right for You?

• Piarom Dates (خرما پیارم) — considered the most premium Iranian date variety, Piarom is grown exclusively in Hajiabad district of Hormozgan province. Its defining characteristics are a thin, almost translucent dark skin wrapped tightly around a firm, semi-dry, caramel-coloured flesh with a complex sweetness that finishes slightly bitter — reminiscent of dark chocolate or espresso.
• Mazafati Dates (خرما مضافتی / Black Pearl Dates) — Iran’s most popular date for fresh consumption, Mazafati is grown in Bam, Kerman province — an area famous for producing the world’s softest, most moisture-rich dates. Deep black in colour with a yielding, almost jammy texture and a pure, rich sweetness without bitterness.  
• Kabkab Dates (خرما کبکاب) — grown in the Dashtestan region of Bushehr province, Kabkab is a large, golden-amber semi-soft date with high natural syrup content. Known for its distinctive caramel sweetness and chewy texture, Kabkab is widely used in Persian cooking — date syrup, desserts, and traditional sweets. Available with natural syrup in 1,200g packs at €29, and in a signature Kabkab mix with tahini, grape molasses, and sesame at €28.
• Zahedi Dates (خرما زاهدی) — a firm, dry, golden-yellow date from Fars and Bushehr provinces with a mild, honey-like sweetness. Zahedi is the date with the longest shelf life and the most versatile use in cooking, baking, and as a natural sweetener substitute. Available from Ajil Hosseini in 1kg format at €29.
• Khasoei Dates (خرما خاصویی) — a soft, syrupy, lesser-known variety from Bushehr province, with a particularly rich molasses-like flavour and tender texture. Available from MazMaz in 250g format at €18.
